Education, if left to define itself directly, is the process by which society recognizes the intellectual and moral capacities of every human being irrespective of race or creed. Education respects all kinds of human abnormalities as well as normal human abilities.
Education is a means to an end, not an end in itself. The end of education is the man.
The importance of education in society cannot be gainsaid if society fails to recognize the fiduciary value of all human beings. The educational value of a human being is unique. This educational value substantially differs from that of a man in that he represents a type of personality more or less typical of humankind. Just as the fiduciary value of a man differs from that of a woman, the fiduciary value of all types of human beings differs from that of each other. The educational value of a particular man is a function of his particular type.
It has been recognized as a fact that the educational value of all men is the same. However, society recognizes the fiduciary value of particular human beings on different planes. This is primarily in two categories i.e. the plane of origin and the plane of destination.
The fiduciary value of the nation can be gauged from the way the pupils and the school teachers respect the intellectual and moral potential of every human being. A critical examination of India’s present education system and practices, both at the school and college levels reveals a considerable failure to meet the standards of right knowledge and wrong knowledge in the country.
It is true that India has a marvelous tradition of educational values and it has met the needs of the time. However, we fail to meet the needs of the time. The present education system and practices in India do not trace the traditions, nor build the character of the teachers and pupils. It is a fact that an examination simply does not measure the educational values of a person. The educational values of Lal Bahadur Shastri may be printed on a certificate. Similarly, the educational values of Ramchal Harj, etc., can be traced on a certificate. However, the educational values of such persons may not be present or available in the institutions providing them. The certificates which are certificates on accounts of Ashfaqan etc., do not document the essential values of the person.
The educational system in India mainly comprises four major subjects such as English, mathematics, Indian and political science. English is essential for all sessions including the session of lectures and research. Math is also fundamental. These four subjects form the foundation of the entire educational system. Once these subjects are mastered by a student, further education becomes easy and relaxation of routine, facilitated by the knowledge and skills acquired in this session.
The major problem of the modern era is the non-association between right knowledge and right learning. The modern era equates knowledge with the use of knowledge with the right techniques and methods. Assenting to a wider knowledge requires the assent of the student himself. He uses his existing talent and innate faculties to acquire for himself comfortable knowledge.
The problem ofutofore1200 has created various challenges for the educationist. Yet the situation is that the knowledge which is essential for attaining a comfortable position in the contemporary world is denied to many. So many colleges and universities in India are facing the problem of non-association between right knowledge and right learning. To get a fair degree of education it is rather crucial for all students to gain exposure to the right knowledge. Partly the answer lies in the proactive nature of the educationists. They should organize a course on right knowledge thus helping the students themselves to learn.
This could be achieved by organizing an intensive course with fruitful discussions. Every student will have a separate course with individual goals. A discussion could be on any topic within the broad field of subject knowledge. Difficult problems can be dealt with through a discussion. A situation where a teacher answers a question of pupils or students through a discussion is an effective one.
The interactive quality of many courses is also a major source of their attraction. The course activities and the contacts with the members of the course community will ensure that every student finds an easy-going environment to get accustomed to the study routine. This will also give the course a smooth and polished appeal.
So in the future, the interactive quality of education courses will remain the hallmark of the Indian educational system.
